How to Tape your Own Ankle

Unfortunately, not every one of us is lucky enough to have club physic or trainer at disposal to tape our ankle prior to training or on sports day. Some of us have to rely on parents, partners or athletes or even try attempt taping it ourselves. In today’s blog post we are going to tell how to tape your own ankle.

#Step1- Preparation

In the first people, most people forget and consequently, their tape fails to adhere or causes skin irritation. So, ensure the skin is clean and dry prior to applying the tape. Skin that is sweaty, muddy, greasy or hairy will compromise the tape’s ability to adhere and stay adhered to the skin throughout your full activity.
Secondly, do not stick the Ankle Strapping Tape on hair, the tape removal process can lead to some pain and skin irritation.

#Step 2- Anchor

The anchor is simply 1 strip of tape applied two inches above the ankle bones. This is used to give the rest of the tape something to grip onto. Most people use 38mm rigid sports tape on the ankle, and if you have a large ankle, 50mm tape might work better for you!

#Step 3- Stirrups

Depending on the size of the ankle, an injured person has to do 2 to 3 strips, starting from the inside of the ankle and bringing around to the opposite, outer side of your ankle. This technique prevents the ankle from rolling inwards. Remember with each strip, overlap each time by half. This will make you feel comfortable and also prevent skin irritation and tears. Ensure the foot remains still and the ankle is at a 90% degree bend as seen in the below given picture.

#Step 4- Figure of 6

This is often the stage where most injured people have trouble. Again to provide extra support for the lateral side of your ankle, you need to start your figure of six on the inside of your ankle. This is the same area where you started the stirrups. So wrap the tape under the inside of your ankle and then up across the front, before again attaching it to the inside. This gives you a figure of six shapes. Repeat this process 2 or 3 times depending on the extra support you required. Avoid overlapping each layer by a half.
I hope you get an idea what steps you need to follow to tape your ankle with Bandage Tape or sports tape.
